If you’re an aspiring musician with hopes of making it in your very own band, then you’re probably wondering how to get started.  At first, the thought of getting started may be intimidating and overwhelming. You may be unsure about where to start or how to make connections with the right people.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in how you’ll get your momentum going.  Unfortunately, overcomplicating things will only lead to stunting your progress.  The best way to get started is to dive in. Before you know it, you’ll be on your way to playing gigs in no time.  Here are some of the best tips for getting started.

Start a Website

Before you start putting up posters or printing stickers, your band should have a website where people can learn about you.  Your website should have clips of your songs, links to your calendar, photos, and any relevant news about your group.

Your website can also serve as your electronic press kit.  When looking for gigs, you can send them to your site to find out more about who you are as a band.

Practice Regularly

It’s critical that you practice as much as possible.  Even though you may not feel like it all the time, and band members may have trouble coordinating schedules, it’s a crucial part of playing gigs.

Failing to practice means that you won’t have a cohesive sound.  The last thing you want is to sound sloppy or unrehearsed once you start getting gigs

Play As Much as Possible

Even though you may have dreams of playing sold-out arenas, in the beginning, stages, it’s essential to take all the gigs you can.

Don’t be too proud to play in nursing homes or at public libraries.  The more experience that you have under your belt, the better!

Write Your Own Music

Although it might feel “safe” playing cover songs written by other people, it’s important to start writing your own material.  There may be a bit of a learning curve at first; however, with enough practice, you will begin to get the hang of creating your own material.

Today, there are so many less rules about what a band must consist of.  Some groups don’t have the traditional format that was once expected of musicians several decades ago.

Don’t get trapped in trying to fit into a box that you may not fit into.  The best way to pursue your dream of creating music for fans is to stay true to your sound.  By combining an authentic style of music with consistent effort, you should be able to get your group off of the ground and onto stages.
